Vice President, Statistics

As Vice President, Statistics, John develops the strategic vision of Alimentiv Statistics and manages its progress towards that vision. John joined McDougall Scientific in April 2008 as a senior statistician. As his tenure increased, he assumed several roles, including managing day-to-day operations, employees, and service delivery, running business development and sales activities and maintaining the computing infrastructure. Following the lead set by Janet McDougall, he also gravitates towards mentoring the next generation of Alimentiv statisticians and managers.

Prior to joining McDougall, John was Senior Statistician at SAS Institute (Canada) where he taught statistics and programming and consulted with clients in health care, pharmaceuticals, retail, manufacturing, finance, and government. Prior to joining SAS, John was a Mathematical Statistician with the U.S. Department of Agriculture where he designed probability-based surveys of the U.S. agri-business sector. In Memoriam (1947-2021) – Janet E.A. McDougall, MSc, P.Stat. (SSC) PStat® (ASA)

Janet founded McDougall Scientific in 1984, when CROs were in their infancy and government regulations for human research was developing. She built the company from a sole proprietorship to a niche CRO servicing an international client base. In March 2021, Janet retired from an active role when McDougall Scientific became an independently operating organization within the Alimentiv family of companies.

Trained as a statistician and having honed her skills within the academic research community as well as the J&J health care family, the ethos of plan, do and check became part of the company’s DNA. She guided the corporate strategy, established key partnerships, emphasized training and compliance throughout the company, closely monitored the changing trends in applied statistical methods and the international regulations in drug development and acted as an executive statistical consultant. Janet obtained her BSc. from the University of Waterloo in 1971, MSc. from the University of Toronto in 1977 and was accredited by both the Statistical Society of Canada (SSC) and the American Statistical Association (ASA) as a Professional Statistician (PStat). She presented to both the Canadian (TPD) and American (FDA) regulatory authorities, served on the SSC board, acted as a column editor for the SSC publication, participated in the DIA working group during the development of the eTMF Reference model, chaired the ASA/DIA Good Clinical Practices Working Group, and was recognized with the University of Waterloo 2016, Faculty of Science, Contributions to Science Alumni Award.

Janet was passionate about mentoring the next generation of statisticians and will be remembered for her spirit of adventure, her curiosity, her sense of humour, her steadfast and determined approach to any challenge, her intelligence, her genuine caring and consideration for others, her sense of social justice and fair play, and her commitment to philanthropy in so many forms. She believed in giving back, paying forward, and sharing whatever she had with heartfelt generosity.
